Crys Bruschi, a licensed esthetician and certified makeup artist, opened her new business, Wicked Fetch, in December.
“I had been doing cosmetic skin care as retail, but I missed working with clients,” Bruschi said. As she looked around for space that would give room to work with clients, she found Suite 3 at 82 Morgan Hill Lane, on the lower level of the Morgan Hill Event Center, in Hermon.
The name of her business, she said, is a reference to the movie, “Mean Girls,” in which the character Gretchen tries to make the word “fetch” mean “really cool, awesome or trendy.” Taking the word play a step further, Bruschi paired “fetch” with “wicked” — used in Maine to mean “very” — to come up with Wicked Fetch.
As an esthetician and makeup artist, Bruschi offers a range of beauty services that include wedding and special event makeup, various types of facials, hand and foot hydration treatments and body waxing. She will travel to a bride’s wedding destination, for an additional fee, if the bride’s wedding is taking place out-of-town. She also offers makeup lessons.
Bruschi’s career path to owning a business didn’t begin with a degree in business or cosmetology. It began with a degree in theater earned at the University of Southern Maine. For a few years she followed her dream of being in the bright lights of a stage to California, where she got homesick for Maine, came home for a while, then went to New York City, still pursuing her dream.
But the road she was on took a sudden turn — she met a wonderful man, fell in love and married him. In the process, her dream took on a new aspect. She attended the Elizabeth Grady School of Esthetics in Medford, Massachusetts, where she became a licensed esthetician and certified makeup artist.
An esthetician, Bruschi explained, is someone who specializes in skin care, including anti-aging, acne and pigmentation issues such as dark spots or discoloration.
Bruschi said she uses the Mario Badescu line of skin care products, which she recommends to her clients based on their individual skin care needs.
Bruschi said she especially enjoys working with brides and bridal parties to give women the look they want for the wedding day. “On her wedding day, a bride wants to be the best possible version of herself,” she said. “Brides most often choose a natural look, rather than a dramatic look, such as a bright red lip and a smokey eye. But I am hoping to get more opportunities to do the bold makeup.”
Bruschi had the chance to do just that on Nov. 24 when she did the makeup of models who walked the runway in a bridal show to raise funds to benefit the Taylor Foundation, an organization that promotes teen driver safety, founded by Corey and Christina Darveau of Bucksort, who lost their daughter in a car accident in 2013. “I love doing events where I can donate my time for a good cause,” Bruschi said.
But even as she opearates her new business, Bruschi still retains her love of theater. She sometimes works as an actress with the Belfast Maskers and currently has a role in the MidCoast Actors Studio production of “Skylight,” which runs May 15-31 in Belfast.
Her favorite part of her job as an esthetician and makeup artist, Bruschi said, is doing bridal makeup. “I love to see the smile on the bride’s face afterward.” Her other favorite part is when one of her skin care clients becomes so relaxed that she falls asleep in the chair during a facial.
Wicked Fetch hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, or by appointment.
