BANGOR, Maine — The New England College Pilgrims pulled away from the Husson University Eagles in the third overtime for a 120-114 men’s basketball victory in North Atlantic Conference play Friday night at Newman Gym.
The Pilgrims took an 87-84 lead with 1:34 left in regulation, but a Raheem Anderson 3-pointer 20 seconds later wound up sending the game into the first extra session.
In the first extra session, a Trevon Butler jumper with 1:13 remaining gave Husson a 97-91 lead, but the Pilgrims scored the last six points, tying the contest on a Dondre James layup with 21 seconds left. The Eagles had a shot to win at the buzzer, but just missed.
In the second overtime, NEC’s Dezron Wilson made a pair of free throws giving the Pilgrims a 105-103 lead with five seconds left. However, Aaron Willis took the ball the length of the court and went to lay the ball in. He got fouled and calmly sank both free throws to send the game into the final overtime with the score knotted at 105.
NEC looked to pull away, clinging to a 115-111 lead in the third overtime, but David Diaz nailed a three to get the Eagles within one. The Pilgrims converted a layup, and, following a Husson miss, made a pair of free throws to push the game just out of reach of the Eagles.
Willis led Husson with a team-high 25 points while Anderson added 23. Jacob Moore and Butler each had 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Wilson led NEC with a triple-double of 34 points, 13 assists and 15 rebounds.
Husson is 15-4 overall and 11-2 in NAC while NEC is 10-10 and 7-6.
UMF 69, Lyndon St. 65
At Farmington, Nick Hilton and Uriah Forest-Bulley each recorded a double-double to power UMaine-Farmington to the North Atlantic Conference win.
Hilton finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds while Forest-Bulley chipped in with 16 points and 10 rebounds for UMF (5-15, 4-9 NAC).
UMF rallied from an eight-point deficit in the first half to post an eight-point lead at halftime and then held off a Lyndon State surge in the second half.
Avery King paced Lyndon (7-12, 6-7) with 17 points.
Colby-Sawyer 70, MMA 67
At Castine, Maine Maritime Academy cut Colby-Sawyer’s lead to two with 15 seconds left when Tyler Gilson hit a layup, but Colby-Sawyer responded by sinking 4-of-5 shots from the line to secure the NAC win.
Taylor Grande paced Colby-Sawyer (13-5, 11-2 NAC) with 19 points while Peter Donato chipped in with 14 points and 8 rebounds.
Tyler Thayer sparked MMA (2-18, 1-12 with 18 points and 5 assists. Nick Holt added 14 points and 6 rebounds. Zachary Radcliffe chipped in with 11 points and Gilson added 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Bates 70, Williams 68
At Lewiston, Bates (16-4, 5-2 NESCAC) snapped a nine-game skid against Williams (12-8, 3-4 NESCAC) with the win and remain in a tie for second place in the conference with Tufts (11-9, 5-2). Williams lost for the third time in four games.
Graham Safford had 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Bobcats, while Mike Boornazian and Malcolm Delpeche added 13 points apiece. Malcolm Delpeche also contributed six rebounds and four blocks, while twin brother Marcus Delpeche pitched in with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Women’s Basketball
Husson 73, NEC 59
At Newman Gym in Bangor, Victoria McIntyre scored 21 points and Stephanie Comstock notched her 1,000th career point as the Husson defeated New England College.
Husson improves to 13-6 overall and 11-2 in NAC play while New England College falls to 15-5 and 9-4.
The Eagles took a 26-20 halftime lead courtesy of eight points and four rebounds from Katy Brochu and four points and three assists from Samira Cruz. Comstock added four points, including becoming the 20th player ever to notch 1,000 career points, to go with three blocks.
The Eagles shot 37.9 percent for the half while limiting the Pilgrims to 31.0 percent. Marjani Lillard and Morgan Beechum each had four points and two rebounds to pace NEC in the first stanza.
Cruz and Brochu finished with 12 points each for Husson, while Brochu added 10 rebounds as well. Comstock and Taylor Blood each scored eight points.
NEC was led by Kayla Lawlor with 18 points.
UMA 48, EMCC 31
At Bangor, Kylie Kemp poured in 22 points to power UMaine-Augusta by Eastern Maine Community College.
Carmen Bragg chipped in with 11 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds for UMA. Jamie Plummer added 7 points and 10 rebounds.
Morgan Card paced EMCC with 18 points while Jordan Maxwell contributed 7 points and 11 rebounds.
UMF 69, Lyndon State 59
At Farmington, Meghan Smith’s second consecutive double-double led the University of Maine at Farmington (9-11, 8-5) to a regular-season sweep over conference rival Lyndon State College.
Smith finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Lindsay Ranquist added 13 points and six rebounds. Lyndon’s Aimee Thompson led all scorers with 16 points and four rebounds.
MMA 62, Colby-Sawyer 56
At Castine, Mary Badeen finished with a game-high 16 points, including a perfect 8 for 8 from the line, nine rebounds, and three assists to lead Maine Maritime to the win.
Mackenzie Vosburgh picked up 14 points, three assists, a rebound and steal for MMA while Kristi Willey contributed 13 points, a team-best four assists, four rebounds and a steal.
Kelsey Cahill and Katie McCarthy led the Chargers with 15 points each, while Jessica Shenkel added 12 points.
The Mariners improve to 9-11 overall and 6-7 in NAC play while the Chargers fall to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the conference.
