BANGOR, Maine — Oceanside made a fourth-quarter charge Saturday morning, but Winslow’s seniors weren’t about to fold.
Josh Kervin scored the tiebreaking basket and sank two free throws, both in the last 45 seconds, to lift No. 2 Winslow to a 46-40 Eastern Maine Class B boys quarterfinal victory at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
Coach Jared Browne’s Black Raiders (17-2) advance to Wednesday’s 7:05 p.m. semifinal against No. 3 Old Town.
“Our seniors down the stretch really stepped up,” Browne said. “When it was a tie game with under a minute left, Josh Kervin going to the rim and getting that go-ahead layup — that’s senior leadership.”
Senior guard Colby Robertson was named the Darling’s/BDN Player of the Game, scoring a game-high 20 points, including five 3-pointers.
Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston (13-7), the No. 7 seed, trailed by 14 points early in the fourth quarter, but Nate Raye and Ricky Sprague scored five points each to fuel a 14-0 run covering 3½ minutes.
Two Keenan Hendricks foul shots made it 37-all with 4:01 to play.
“In between quarters, we talked about playing with some pride and fire and making a run,” Oceanside coach Matt Breen said. “We came out, kind of found a group we had a little success with and they knocked down some shots.”
The Black Raiders made the plays down the stretch. Shortly after missing two free throws, Kervin (7 points, 4 rebounds) sliced down the lane for a layup that put Winslow ahead 42-40 with 1:02 left.
After an Oceanside miss, Nick Mazurek was whistled for an intentional foul. Kervin made both shots, then Winslow put the game away with two late free throws.
Senior forward Justin Martin logged a double-double for the Black Raiders, with 11 points, 15 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Junior Keenan Hendricks paced Oceanside with 12 points and seven rebounds. Mazurek (6 rebounds) and Raye posted seven points each. Senior starter Jarrod Leonardi was hampered by a significant ankle injury and managed only two points.
Robertson was the catalyst, as Winslow turned a five-point deficit into a six-point lead in the second quarter. He opened a 10-0 brust with an eight-foot runner from the lane, then went in for a layup and free throw after a Kervin steal.
He capped his personal eight-point run with a 3-pointer off his own steal to put the Black Raiders on top 16-13 with 5:53 to play in the half. Kervin’s conventional three-point play extended the lead to six.
