SURRY, Maine — Local fire officials are hoping to have the state fire marshal’s office investigate a blaze that destroyed a house Tuesday night on Cross Road.
Richard Black, assistant chief with the Surry Volunteer Fire Department, said Thursday that the fire appears to have started in the kitchen area of the home, but firefighters are not sure what caused it. He said the homeowner noticed flames coming out of that end of the house after going to his neighbor’s house to eat dinner.
Firefighters were unable to save the home and had to return twice Wednesday morning to put out hotspots, Black said. The home is probably insured, he added, but he was not sure.
Black said department officers have been in contact with state investigators about the blaze but that it is “kind of up in the air” if they will come to examine the scene.
No injuries resulted from the fire. About 50 firefighters from Surry, Blue Hill, Ellsworth, Orland, Penobscot and Sedgwick helped fight the blaze, while Bucksport and Peninsula ambulance crews assisted.
