The Husson University men’s and women’s basketball teams each earned a second seed and bye in the quarterfinal round of the North Atlantic Conference tourneys, which open Tuesday.
Colby-Sawyer (15-3 NAC) is the top seed for the men and Castleton State (17-1) is the women’s No. 1 team, both earning quarterfinal byes.
The men’s quarterfinals feature No. 6 Lyndon State (9-9) at No. 3 New England College (11-7) at 5 p.m. and No. 5 Thomas of Waterville (12-13) at No. 4 Castleton (13-12) at a time to be announced.
In the women’s quarterfinals, No. UMaine-Farmington (10-8) will visit No. 4 Colby-Sawyer (12-6) at 6:30 p.m. and No. 6 Maine Maritime Academy of Castine (9-9) will be at No. 3 New England College (13-5) at 7:30 p.m.
The men’s and women’s winners advance to the semifinal rounds on Friday at Colby-Sawyer and Castleton, respectively.
Men’s Basketball
Thomas 73, Husson 71
At Newman Gym in Bangor Saturday, Justin Murray’s turnaround jumper at the buzzer lifted Thomas by Husson.
Husson’s Raheem Anderson had tied the game at 71 with a 3-pointer with 6.2 seconds left before Murray’s game-winner.
Levin Barnes paced Thomas (12-13, 10-8 NAC) with 22 points.
Trevon Butler sparked Husson (19-6, 14-4) with 22 points and nine rebounds. Willis added 18 points and Jacob Moore added 13 points and nine rebounds.
UMF 71, MMA 68
At Castine on Saturday, Pet Sumner hit two free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the UMaine-Farmington win over Maine Maritime Academy.
Sumner led UMF with 19 points while Nick Hilton added 18 points and five rebounds. Eric Berry chipped in with 13 points and Uriah Forest Bulley added 10.
Jason Hatch paced MMA with 19 points six rebounds and five assists. Tyler Thayer added 16 points and six rebounds while Dylan Stevens had 11 points.
UMBC 73, Maine 66
At Baltimore, Maryland, the University of Maryland Baltimore County shot 50 percent from the field on Saturday, setting the tone for the America East victory over the University of Maine.
The Retrievers outscored the Black Bears 16-9 during the last 3 ½ minutes to beat UMaine for the second time this season.
UMBC (4-23, 2-12 AE) placed five players in double figures, led by a 16-point effort from Cody Joyce. Will Darley (7 rebounds, 6 assists) and Malcolm Brent (4 assists) tossed in 15 points each, Jourdan Grant (8 rebounds, 5 assists) posted 14 points and Devarick Houston finished with 10 points, five steals and three assists.
Kevin Little connected for a game-high 18 points and snared eight rebounds to propel UMaine (3-24, 2-12 AE). Till Gloger contributed 18 points and eight rebounds and Aaron Calixte added nine points and five rebounds.
The Retrievers made 23 of 46 field goals, including 15 of 25 two-point shots, and converted 19 of 21 free throws. The Bears grabbed a 33-27 rebounding edge.
Women’s Basketball
Husson 83, Thomas 48
At Newman Gym in Bangor on Saturday, Husson held Thomas to just 18 second-half points to improve to 17-8 overall and 15-3 in the NAC.
Chandler Guerrette scored 16 points to lead Husson and Samira Cruz added 15 points. Stephanie Comstock contributed 12 points, four rebounds and four steals.
Jordan Agger-Barnes paced Thomas with 19 points.
MMA 52, UMF 34
At Castine on Saturday, Maine Maritime jumped out to a 16-0 lead en route to the victory.
Mary Badeen paced MMA (12-13, 9-9) with 21 points, including five 3-pointers to set a Maine Maritime Academy single season record with 63 3-pointers. She added a game-best 11 rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Kristi Willey chipped in with 14 points.
Lindsay Ranquist sparked UMF (11-14, 10-8) with 10 points and eight rebounds.
