Former Bangor high swimmer second in league finals
Former Bangor High swim standout David Smallwood recorded a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly for Worcester Polytechnic Institute during the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Championships Saturday in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Smallwood finished in 49.5 seconds and also notched a second-place finish as a member of the 200-medley relay team that clocked a 1:32.1.
Former Mount Desert Island standout Ross Johnston also notched a 10th-place finish in the backstroke for Wheaton College with a time of 55 seconds.
Celtics’ Sullinger out for season
Boston Celtics forward Jared Sullinger will miss the remainder of the season with a left metatarsal stress fracture in his left foot.
The team announced the decision Sunday following further medical evaluation at the New England Baptist Hospital.
Sullinger said he felt some discomfort in the foot last week after a win over the Atlanta Hawks on Feb. 11.
After the All-Star break, Sullinger removed himself from practice in Sacramento on Wednesday. Then team trainer Ed Lacerte took him for the initial tests Thursday that revealed the foot injury.
Sullinger was averaging 14.4 points and 8.1 rebounds in 51 games this season.
Bruins snap six-game winless streak
CHICAGO — Patrice Bergeron recorded his 200th career goal and added two assists as the Boston Bruins scored four times in the second period to emphatically snap a season-high six-game winless skid (0-4-2), 6-2 over the Chicago Blackhawks Sunday.
Reilly Smith and defenseman Dougie Hamilton each collected a goal and an assist and Loui Eriksson, Milan Lucic and Gregory Campbell also tallied for the Bruins, who wrapped up a five-game road trip with a 1-2-2 mark. Brian Ferlin notched an assist for his first NHL point and Tuukka Rask finished with 26 saves while making his 17th consecutive appearance.
Captain Jonathan Toews scored a power-play goal with two seconds remaining in the first period for the Blackhawks, who have dropped three in a row and 13 of their last 23 (10-10-3). Bryan Bickell also tallied, defenseman Duncan Keith had two assists and Corey Crawford yielded four goals on 14 shots before being relieved midway into the second by Antti Raanta (14 saves).
Hahn wins playoff at Riviera for first title
PACIFIC PALISADES, California — James Hahn clinched his first PGA Tour title with a gripping playoff victory over fellow American Dustin Johnson and England’s Paul Casey at the Northern Trust Open on Sunday.
Hahn struck his tee shot at the third extra hole, the par-three 14th, to 24 feet and coolly sank the birdie putt before Johnson missed his attempt from 12 feet.
Casey was eliminated on the previous hole, the tricky par-four 10th, where Johnson and Hahn both hit superb lob wedges from wet rough to the back left of the green and sank their birdie putts.
The trio had finished the 72 regulation holes on six-under-par 278, Johnson and Hahn each closing with a two-under 69 and Casey finishing bogey-birdie-birdie-bogey for a 68.
