ROCKLAND, Maine — A Camden man who has been held in jail since early November on charges of breaking into a Rockport home and sexually assaulting a woman has been charged with a similar offense in Camden.

Eli Z. Kemberling was scheduled to make his initial appearance Monday in Knox County Superior Court on charges of burglary, aggravated criminal trespass, and assault.

Camden police have said that since Kemberling’s arrest in Rockport, the department was investigating whether he committed similar crimes at a Maple Street home on Aug. 3. In the Camden case, a woman awoke to find a man standing over her, touching her.

In the Rockport case, the woman told police she was asleep in bed when she felt someone touching her. She at first thought it was her husband, but when she opened her eyes, she saw a man wearing a mask, according to an affidavit filed in the case. The woman screamed, and the man ran down the stairs, where her husband, who had fallen asleep on the couch, awoke and tackled the fleeing man.

Kemberling was carrying a large knife and later told police he was planning to “do damage,” according to the affidavit. He was charged with burglary, aggravated criminal trespass, unlawful sexual contact, theft and violating a condition of release.

When arrested in the Rockport case, Kemberling already was on bail on previous charges of theft and operating under the influence. He is being held without bail.
