DEDHAM, Maine — A home on Mill Road was heavily damaged by fire Friday afternoon.

The blaze at 124 Mill Road, a two-story residence about a half-mile from Route 46, was reported shortly after noon.

Dedham Fire Chief Craig Shane said the blaze was contained to the interior of the house. The homeowners were headed out the door when they saw smoke and fire downstairs, and they got out safely, Shane said.

Firefighters arrived to heavy fire downstairs and smoke pouring out of the roof, Shane said.

The chief added there was considerable fire damage to the downstairs part of the house and heavy smoke and heat damage upstairs.

With an open area upstairs, crews had to knock the blaze down quickly to keep it from spreading rapidly.

“That was the big fight, knock it down quick downstairs,” Shane said.

Firefighters also were faced with the challenge of a lengthy driveway leading from Mill Road to the residence.

“It was a long hike in here getting apparatus in here and a long way to supply water,” Shane said.

The state fire marshal’s office was called to investigate the cause of the fire.

Fire departments from Orrington, Brewer, Dedham, Eddington and Holden battled the blaze.
