Symphony Soiree
BANGOR — The Bangor Symphony Orchestra will offer events for concertgoers and supporters the Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8, 2015.
The seventh annual Symphony Soiree will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Gracie Theatre on the Husson University campus. The event will feature unique silent and live auction items, including the chance to commission new works from BSO Music Director and Conductor Lucas Richman and Maine artist and University of Maine professor Kerstin Engman, Patriots tickets, kayaks, jewelry, art and local restaurant gift certificates. At 8 p.m. attendees will move to the Gracie Theatre stage for dessert, the live auction, and a variety of performances featuring Maestro Richman, members of the BSYO, pianist Norman Krieger and vocalist Joelle Morris. Soiree tickets are $60 each and available at bangorsymphony.org and by phone at 942-5555, ext. 2.
The BSO will continue its Masterworks season with Russian Masters on Sunday, March 8, at the Collins Center. The concert will feature pianist Norman Krieger in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

‘The Little Mermaid’
BANGOR — Bangor Ballet will present “The Little Mermaid” in three different locations March. Based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale, the original ballet by local choreographer Heinrick Snyder is the third of four Bangor Ballet productions in the 2014-2015 season. The fourth production scheduled for June will be “Les Sylphides” and “Coppelia Variations.”
Performances for “The Little Mermaid” are scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft; 7 p.m. Saturday, March 21, and 4 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at the Gracie Theatre in Bangor; and 7 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the Bucksport Performing Arts Center. An ASL interpreter will be provided at the March 22 performance.
Tickets are $15, $10 seniors and students, $8 children 12 and under. Tickets are available for all shows at Thomas School of Dance, SevenArts in the Maine Grind in Ellsworth, Patrick’s Hallmark Shop in Bangor and BookStacks in Bucksport. Tickets for the Dover-Foxcroft show are also available at Center Theatre, 564-8943. ‘Holes’
BANGOR — In a winter of record low temperatures, members of Penobscot Theatre Company’s Dramatic Academy have been working up a sweat, digging holes with Louis Sachar’s stage adaptation of his award-winning novel. Weaving past and present, “Holes” is the story of the cursed Yelnats family, Kissin’ Kate Barlow, and the hard-luck kids at Camp Green Lake.
Under the direction of Amy Roeder, Penobscot Theatre Company’s director of education, the family-friendly show iaa appropriate for audiences of all ages. Performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday, March 6-8, at the William S. Cohen School, 304 Garland St. in Bangor.
The cast includes these young people, age 5 to 13:
- Tiny Thespians: Lily Barrington, Colin Buck, Maia Johnson.
- Youth Troupe: Andrew Barret, Tala Bayless, Sophia Bilodeau, Thea Bowden, Ian Buck, Elisabeth Budd, Emma Campbell, Kaitlyn Carrerira, Ian Eskisen, Madison Evans, Rebekah Friedman, Isabella Gappa, Molly Hagerty, Meghan Harriman, Anna Kemble, Conor Laferriere, Nathan Manaker, Gillian McCarthy, Sophia Mullins, Joseph Rutledge, Lana Sabbagh, Lilie Sites, Natalie Tzovarras and Laurel Whidden.
Rounding out the creative team are Ben Layman, assistant director; Elliott Wilcox, scenic and lighting designer; Brandie Rita, sound designer; and Catherine Darragh, costume designer and stage manager.

Free admission
BANGOR — The University of Maine Museum of Art will offer free admission to the public in 2015 as the result of a gift from Penobscot Financial Advisors.
Penobscot Financial Advisors has been a longtime supporter of the museum and its mission to present diverse modern and contemporary art exhibitions and create exceptional educational experiences for visitors.

Public forum
BANGOR — The city of Bangor Commission on Cultural Development will host a public forum to discuss arts and culture in Bangor 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, in the auditorium at John Bapst Memorial High School.
The Commission on Cultural Development seeks to enrich and advance Bangor as a welcoming and vibrant city of arts and culture. The forum invites arts supporters, educators, creators and community members to discuss the contributions and challenges within Bangor’s creative economy. The goal for the evening is to understand how the city can help to support the continued development of arts and cultural in Bangor, and to develop ideas for the future growth of the arts in our community.

Writing workshop
HOLDEN — A Winter Writing Workshop: What would the bear write? with Cheryl Daigle, writer, photographer and conservationist, will be held noon-3 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Fields Pond Audubon Center. Explore your inner bear through poetry and short story writing exercises inspired by favorite animal loving authors. Walk along the forest edge and explore the winter landscape. Warm refreshments will be provided.

University Singers tour
ORONO — The University of Maine University Singers will perform several free concerts around central and northern Maine in March as part of the choir’s annual spring tour.
Under the direction of Francis Vogt, a UMaine School of Performing Arts faculty member, the group of approximately 60 singers will perform evening shows at middle and high schools and a church before ending the tour with two performances on campus.
The tour will kick off at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 9, at Stearns High School in Millinocket. Other free concerts are at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at Presque Isle Middle School; 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, at Madawaska Middle-High School; 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 13, at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in South Paris; and 7 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at South Parish Congregational Church in Augusta.
The choir will end its the tour with performances at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at Minsky Recital Hall on the UMaine campus.
