Seniors think about many things as they age. One of the most prevalent concerns that seems to come with the territory is falling. The fear of taking a fall, which can compel a senior to limit activities and potentially become isolated, is almost as debilitating as the fall itself.

There are numerous causes for seniors taking a tumble. Throw or area rugs are high on the hit list. While sprucing up the decor, they can also be the cause of extreme misery. To be safer, get rid of them, but if you simply can’t bear to be without them, at least secure them to the floor with double-sided, carpet-grade tape.

Medications, poor sleep habits, impaired vision, diabetes, heart disease, or problems with your thyroid, nerves, feet or blood vessels can also affect your balance, leading to a fall.

It’s important not to let the fear of falling prevent you from doing all the things you love. Remaining active is an important step in halting the probability of a fall because the more active you are, the stronger you will be. Talk to your health care provider about an exercise program that uses weights. There are several to choose from that can increase strength and mobility. Always report a fall to your doctor, even if you aren’t hurt.

Have your vision and hearing checked. Even minor changes can increase the risk of losing your balance. When getting new glasses, take the time to acclimate yourself to them and watch your step because things can look a little distorted at first.

After sitting for a while, be sure to stand up slowly. Rising too quickly can cause your blood pressure to drop, which can make you feel unsteady.

Look around your house. If you’re like most of us, there’s a lot of stuff cluttering up your space. Spring is a great time to clear the pathways.
