ROCKLAND, Maine — The Rockland-area school board voted unanimously Thursday night to hold classes on Saturdays to make up for snow days.
The Regional School Unit 13 board voted to approve the recommendation of Superintendent John McDonald. The plan calls for school to be held on four Saturdays — March 28, April 11, May 9 and May 16. In addition, a scheduled March 13 teacher workshop day will be a half day for students.
The district has called off school 10 times this year but had five school days set aside within the calendar.
The superintendent said an online survey was conducted and staff were asked for feedback. He said there would not be enough staff during April vacation to run the schools because so many people already had made vacation commitments.
“There would not have been enough substitutes in all of Knox County to run the schools,” he said.
RSU 13 consists of Rockland, Thomaston, St. George, South Thomaston, Owls Head and Cushing.
