ROCKLAND, Maine — A Thomaston man is back in jail after police say he sold a snowmobile belonging to someone else.

Jacob A. Mondello, 20, is being held at the Knox County Jail on a felony count of theft. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Friday afternoon in Rockland District Court.

Mondello got out of jail recently after serving a seven-month sentence for stealing more than $200,000 in cash last April from a home on Vinalhaven. Nearly all the money was recovered. But before Mondello was caught, he and his co-defendant went on a shopping spree that included buying a boat. The boat was returned.

According to an affidavit filed in court on the new case, Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy John Hansen said a man called the office this week to ask whether a snowmobile he had purchased four days earlier had been stolen. The investigation revealed the snowmobile had been left at Mondello’s residence and he sold it without the owner knowing.

Mondello is being held on a probation violation since his sentence from last year was seven years with all but seven months suspended to be followed by three years of probation.
