WEST NEWFIELD, Maine — A child welfare check on Thursday led state police to uncover an elaborate marijuana growing operation at a residence, according to a state police statement.

The 32-year-old homeowner, whose name was not disclosed, was found to be in possession of one pound of marijuana, 4.3 ounces of processed marijuana, approximately five pounds of marijuana in a drying state, 27 flowering plants, 21 seedling plants and approximately 200-300 marijuana vegetative plants, according to the statement.

The homeowner did provide police with a medical marijuana certificate, but that only allows him to be in possession of 2.5 ounces of processed marijuana, six flowering plants and 12 seedling plants, the statement said.

Police summoned the man for aggravated cultivation of marijuana and unlawful possession of a scheduled drug, but he was not arrested, according to the statement.

The York County Sheriff’s Office and Maine Drug Enforcement Agency assisted in the investigation.
