WALDO, Maine — A Brooks man was arrested Saturday and charged with stealing firewood last month from a nonprofit firewood provider.
James Bohan, 54, was arrested by Waldo County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Daniel Thompson after Bohan was stopped by the officer and admitted to the theft, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
The theft occurred Feb. 23 at the Waldo County Wood Shed in Waldo. A black truck with unique characteristics was involved in the incident, according to police. Information provided by a concerned citizen led deputies to focus the investigation onto one suspect.
On Saturday, Thompson saw Bohan in the truck and confronted him. Bohan allegedly admitted that he was the person who had taken the firewood from the facility.
A cord and a half of wood valued at about $400 had been reported stolen. The firewood was to be donated to the needy.
Bohan was arrested for violation of conditions of release and issued a summons for the theft of firewood. He was taken to the Waldo County Correctional Center and later released on $150 cash bail.
Lt. Jason Trundy said Bohan told officers that he sold the wood. The investigation is continuing, and the wood has yet to be recovered.
