CARIBOU, Maine — As Mainers awoke on St. Patrick’s Day, white — not Irish green — was the dominant color.

With snow expected to fall across eastern, central and northern parts of the state throughout the day, the National Weather Service’s Caribou forecast center has posted winter storm warnings and advisories.

The heaviest snow is expected to fall along the Canadian border in southeast Aroostook and Washington counties, according to the weather service, and those areas are under the winter storm warnings.

Northern Aroostook, Piscataquis, Somerset and Penobscot counties are under the winter weather advisory, according to the weather service.

Southeastern Aroostook and all of Washington County could receive up to 10 inches of fresh powder, according to the weather service, while all other areas could see anywhere from four to eight inches.

The fresh powder is expected to make driving conditions hazardous, and snow may mix with rain at times in Washington County.
