HARTLAND, Maine — A Palmyra woman was charged with theft after allegedly taking an elderly woman’s wallet from a shopping cart at the Hartland IGA earlier this month, according to officials.

Surveillance images from the March 10 incident had been posted on the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page, which generated more than 300 shares and 25,000 views, according to Chief Deputy James Ross.

Surveillance footage showed the 88-year old woman had forgotten her wallet from the bottom of a shopping cart, but other footage showed Joyce Harrington, 55, and a man enter the store and Harrington grab the wallet from the cart, according to Ross.

After Harrington had grabbed the wallet, the footage showed her talking to the man briefly and then heading out to a vehicle that they arrived in, according to Ross.

The surveillance footage, along with tips from the public, helped police identify Harrington as a suspect and she was formally charged on March 13 after admitting to the theft.

The man Harrington was with has not been charged but could face charges after the case is reviewed by the District Attorney’s office.
