JUPITER, Florida — Two former Portland Sea Dogs standout pitchers turned in much different outings for the Boston Red Sox in a 9-4 loss to the Miami Marlins Tuesday in a spring training game.

Brian Johnson and Henry Owens, both left-handers, received some work with Johnson recording a strong effort as he started the game and allowed a hit and a run over 3 ⅔ innings. He walked three and struck out five.

Owens came on in a relief role and was reached for four hits and six runs in 1 ⅓ innings. He walked one and struck out one.

The Marlins rallied against Owens in an eight-run eighth inning when Jeff Baker, Jordany Valdespin and Jhonatan Solano each drove in two runs.

Allen Craig sparked the Red Sox with a double and three RBIs and Jackie Bradley chipped in with three hits. Blake Swihart contributed a double and RBI and Hanley Ramirez singled.

The Red Sox are off on Wednesday, but righty Justin Masterson will pitch in a minor league contest. The Sox return to action at 1:05 p.m. Thursday against the Twins at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Florida. Lefty Wade Miley will get the start.

MLB NOTES: Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu will rest his injured shoulder for two to three weeks and start the season on the disabled list. Ryu returned to Los Angeles from spring training for an examination on Monday that determined there was no structural damage to the shoulder, according to a CBSSports.com report Tuesday. The left-hander’s shoulder inflammation flared up Sunday while trying to throw and the Dodgers decided to take precautionary measures.

This is the third time in less than 12 months that Ryu was sidelined by shoulder pain. He went on the disabled list last April and May, missing 23 games. In September, he left his last start of the regular season after one inning with a sore shoulder. He underwent a contrast MRI that revealed inflammation once again but no structural damage in his shoulder. He returned to pitch in the Dodgers’ first-round playoff series three weeks later.
