Bruins recall Morrow on emergency basis

The Boston Bruins recalled defenseman Joe Morrow from Providence of the American Hockey League, and he was eligible for Thursday night’s game at the Detroit Red Wings.

The reason for Morrow’s callup was not immediately clear, although Torey Krug did not take part in the Bruins’ morning stake at Joe Louis Arena on Thursday.

Morrow made his NHL debut on Oct. 30, and had one goal and a plus-three rating in 15 games before returning to Providence. The 22-year-old has three goals and five assists in 27 games with Providence this season.

Sea Dogs to host Autism Awareness Day on April 11

PORTLAND — The Portland Sea Dogs in partnership with Embracing the World of Autism will host Autism Awareness Day at Hadlock Field on Saturday, April 11th when the Sea Dogs take on the Reading Fightin Phils at 1 p.m.

The event will be held with the support of University of New England Occupational Therapy graduate students. The UNE students will create and facilitate activities for children and families in a special “Sensory Room” that will allow children with autism to self-regulate using movement, calming sensory input and fidget items. This allows children to fully participate in the Sea Dogs game.

Donald Frost, 13, a child with Asperger’s syndrome, will be singing the National Anthem prior to the start of the game. Representatives will also throw out the ceremonial first-pitch and serve as a junior public address announcer.

The goal of the event is to raise autism awareness and to help people with autism perform the occupations of everyday life.

Braves’ minor leaguer suspended for 80 games

Atlanta Braves minor-league pitcher Arodys Vizcaino was suspended Thursday for 80 games without pay after a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced that the right-hander tested positive for Stanozolol, a substance that is prohibited as part of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Vizcaino, who is with Triple-A Gwinnett and is also on the Braves’ 40-man roster, will begin serving the suspension with the regular season begins next week.

The 24-year-old was acquired from the Chicago Cubs during the winter.

Jets’ Byfuglien suspended for four games

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien was suspended without pay for four games on Thursday as the result of a hit on New York Rangers forward J.T. Miller.

Byfuglien cross-checked Miller during Tuesday night’s Jets-Rangers game at 17:20 of the second period. The Rangers went on to defeat the Jets 3-2.

No penalty was called on the play and Miller was not injured on the hit.

The Jets have five games remaining in the regular season, starting Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension will cost Byfuglien $111,827.

ESPN not renewing Bob Knight deal

Bob Knight’s final broadcasting call with ESPN will be Thursday’s NIT game between Stanford and Miami (Florida.).

Knight has worked for ESPN for seven seasons after a successful if volatile coaching career at Army, Indiana and Texas Tech.

Knight retired as the winningest coach in Division I basketball with 902 victories but was passed by former pupil Mike Krzyzewski at Duke. Knight was a three-time national champion with the Hoosiers before he was fired because of his abrasive personality and short temper.
