ELLSWORTH, Maine — A 2-year-old girl from Ellsworth who wandered away from her home shortly before noon Friday was found safe within half an hour of her disappearance, a Maine Warden Service official said.
The child — who was wearing only socks, jeans and a shirt at the time — managed to open the door to the outside, where weather conditions were cold and damp, Cpl. John MacDonald said.
Personnel from the Maine Warden Service, the Ellsworth police and fire departments, Maine Marine Patrol and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office quickly were on scene.
Within 30 minutes of their arrival, Ellsworth police Sgt. Shawn Willey and his police dog partner, Chase, along with Marine Patrol Officer Rustin Ames located the child, MacDonald said.
“She was soaked and cold but in good condition and had wandered approximately one-quarter of a mile from the residence,” MacDonald said.
The child was taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and treated for hypothermia, he said.
