MACHIAS – Vernon Eugene “Gene” Lord, 62, passed away April 2, 2015, at a Bangor hospital, with his wife, Cathy, and close members of his family at his side. Gene was born March 27, 1953, in Hartford, CT, the son of Vernon Matthews and Patricia (Rier) Lord, and he was the oldest of six children.
As a child, Gene lived in Portland and Manset, finally moving to Machias when he was six years old growing up on Water Street in Machias. Gene graduated from Machias Memorial High School and attended the University of Maine at Machias and the national insurance agents school in Boston. Gene worked as an insurance agent for many years and owned the Lord Insurance Agency in Machias. Gene was a people person and so enjoyed the simple pleasures of life such as visiting friends and relatives and sharing memories and moments with anyone stopping to share a few minutes with him. During his lifetime, he was the recipient of an enormous amount of love from his children as he was “Daddy” to his four footed children, Peppy, Major, Captain, Rocky, Joy, Max, Honey and Torrie, who all enjoyed one of the highlights of their day when Daddy would arrive home to share the rest of his day with them. Gene experienced so much happiness sharing his life with his kids and he loved them all deeply. Gene loved to travel with his friends to watch the standardbred races in Bangor and St. John and to the fall fairs. Many pleasant times were spent in the companionship of his horse racing buddies. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fanatic. Gene loved to watch the games and root for his teams. He was especially happy that his Patriots did so well during the past year, and he was anticipating the upcoming season. Gene and Cathy were together for thirty-eight years. He loved to tell the story of how they met four years before they were married on a blind date in a bank parking lot just across the street from his office. He would tell his listeners how he could look out his window every day and remember meeting the person he would spend the rest of his life with.
Gene is survived by his wife and best friend of thirty-four years, Cathy; siblings, Cindy Grenier and husband, Danny, of Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Douglas Lord of Eastport, Diane Lord of Saco and Donald Lord of Whiting; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Linda Lord.
A Celebration of Gene’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2015, at the East Machias Congregational Church with the Rev. Dr. Francois Akoa officiating; this is the church where Gene and Cathy were married. Gene loved animals so much that in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Ark Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 276, Cherryfield, ME 04622. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at
