Bangor Community Chorus Concert
BANGOR — The Bangor Community Chorus will present its 46th annual Spring Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the First United Methodist Church, 703 Essex St.
The chorus, under the direction of Conductor Douglas A. Beck, invite the public to attend the concert.
Beck joined the chorus two years ago, as its seventh conductor, bringing with him an
extensive musical background. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. He has been widely applauded as a conductor and keyboard artist in the United States and abroad. He is known in the Bangor area as a teacher of voice, piano and organ.
Reflecting a “Simple Gifts” theme, the Bangor Community Chorus will perform a varied program, ranging from traditional music, folk songs and classic pop, including works by the master composers Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms.
The concert is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted.
Food packing event
BANGOR — The third annual Meals from Maine Food Packing Event and Community Food Drive will be held 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the former Circuit City Building on Stillwater Avenue.
The Food Packing Event will prepare more than 100,000 meals to be shipped to starving children in poverty or disaster stricken areas around the world. Heirloom seed packets also will be assembled to send with the food to create sustainable food sources.
The Community Food Drive will collect nonperishable food items for distribution by Manna Ministries to local food pantries.
Meals from Maine is seeking volunteers for food and seed packing, and donations of $32 or more to assist with the purchase of the specially formulated food and seeds.

Walk for LIfe
BANGOR — First Step Pregnancy Resource Center will hold its Walk for Life at 9 a.m. Saturday. Participants will meet in the parking lot at 336 Mt. Hope Ave. Walkers with pledges will receive a free T-shirt. The event will feature activities for children.
Open House
BANGOR — Bangor Christian Schools will hold an Open House for students entering
grades six through 12 for the 2015-16 school year. The event will take place Friday, May
1, at the school. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the foyer of Bangor Baptist Church.
The day will begin with a morning chapel service and students will rotate through various sessions that will acquaint them with the different programs offered at the school. A complimentary lunch will be provided for visiting students and parents.
Headmaster Jim Frost and Principal Martha Boone will host a reception for visiting students and parents at 2 p.m. in the Thrive Center.
Parents may stay for all or part of the day. Each prospective student who attends the Open House will receive a 10 percent tuition discount for the 2015-16 school year and will be eligible for a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship.

Kiwanis yard sale
BANGOR — The Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis Club will hold its annual yard sale 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at the Fireside Inn, 570 Main St. The event will be held rain or shine. Proceeds will benefit Kiwanis children’s charities.

Basket Bingo
BANGOR — The Zonta Club of Bangor will host Basket Bingo Sunday, April 26, at the Davis Road Community Center, 161 Davis Road. Doors will open at noon and games will begin at 1 p.m. Tickets are $12 each or $10 per ticket for groups of four or more. Door prizes will be drawn between games.
Zonta Club of Bangor supports local organizations such as Sarah’s House, Girl Scouts of Maine, Spruce Run/WomenCare, and several scholarships for local students.
Museum fundraiser
BANGOR — The Maine Discovery Museum Disco fundraiser will be held 8-11:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2, in Season’s “Down Under.”
Music for dancing will be provided by Motor Booty Affair.
Tickets are $40 and may be purchased online through EventBrite or in person at the museum’s admissions desk.
Raffle tickets for a ride to the Disco on the Fun Bus also are available for purchase at $5 each.
Health Kids Day
BANGOR — The Bangor YMCA will host Healthy Kids Day, a free family fun event to promote healthy lifestyles for children and their families 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the Y, 17 Second St. Event activities will include the Y’s Dead River pool inflatable, face painting, arts and crafts, read aloud time, healthful snacks, tae kwon do, games, clinics and more. Blacksmithing 101
BRADLEY — The Maine Forest and Logging Museum will host Blacksmithing 101 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the museum, Government Road.
Byron Aubrey will share the nuts and bolts — or hammer and tongs — of getting started in smithing. He will discuss the tools, equipment and resources needed. The class is open to all ages, including teens. A small amount of forging demonstration may be involved.

Kindergarten registration
GLENBURN — Kindergarten registration for the Glenburn 2015-2016 school year will be held Thursday and Friday, May 7-8. Children should be accompanied to registration by a parent or legal guardian. A screening is required by state regulation and will be done by members of the school staff. Children who will be 5 years old on or before Oct. 15 are eligible to attend kindergarten.

Hampden Garden Club
HAMPDEN — “Birding by Ear,” a talk by Bob Duchesne, Bangor Daily News columnist and founder of the Maine Birding Trail, will be presented by the Hampden Garden Club at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 28, at Harmony Hall, 24 Kennebec Road. Learn to identify birds by their songs.

Volunteer training
HOLDEN — Volunteer naturalist training sessions will be held 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, April 29, and 1-3 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Fields Pond Audubon Center, 216 Fields Pond Road.
Volunteers will lead nature walks for school groups in kindergarten through grade four at the center. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary. Content will be provided that prepares volunteer naturalists for the walks.
Typically the walks are scheduled weekday mornings from early May through June. Volunteers will choose the time slots that best suits their needs.

Open House and Fly-In
OLD TOWN — The Maine ACE Camp and the Old Town Aviation Explorers Post 787 will join forces 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 2, to put on the third annual Open House and Fly-In at Dewitt Field, Old Town Municipal Airport, 100 Airport Road (Gilman Falls Road).
The event will offer free admission, introductory flights for all ages, local scenic flights, airplane wash, demonstrations and radio control aircraft.
A barbecue lunch will be available for $5.
Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Maine Aviation Career Education Camp, a summer camp for teens interested in aviation and the Old Town Aviation Explorers Post 787, an Aviation Eagle Badge program supported by the Boy Scouts of America.
Benefit supper
OLD TOWN — A spaghetti supper and auction to benefit the family of Leamon Ireland, who recently was diagnosed with lung cancer and is unable to work, will be held 5-8 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Old Town Recreation Center, 342 Bennoch Road. The cost of the supper is $5, $20 family.

Mayflower Descendents
ORONO — The spring membership meeting of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Maine will be held at noon Saturday, May 2, the Black Bear Inn.
Shane Roberts, a graduate of Yale University and the University of Connecticut, will be the guest speaker. He will discuss the reasons the pilgrims came to a new land.
The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Maine offers scholarships to graduating high school senior students and gives awards for contest essays entered by younger students. Both scholarship students and essay winners will be honored at the meeting.

Yard sale items needed
VERONA — The Verona Women’s Club is seeking nice clothing and small household items for a yard sale to be held 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Verona Town Hall. Items may be dropped off during regular business hours, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 3-7 p.m. Thursday, at the Verona Town Office.
The Women’s Club elected officers in April. They are Claude Heath, president; Lee Collins, vice president and secretary; and Cora Webster, treasurer.
Club meetings are held the first and third Thursdays of each month.
