FARMINGTON — Debra Mazzeo pitched back-to-back two-hitters to spearhead New England College to a sweep of its North Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader against the University of Maine-Farmington at Prescott Field on Friday.
Mazzeo surrendered one earned run and struck out four in a 3-2 win in the opener, then limited the Beavers to one earned run and struck out one in a 3-1 verdict in the nightcap.
In the first game, Maranda Johnson drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly in seventh inning to lift the Pilgrims (17-13, 6-4 NAC) to victory. Kiley Williams singled three times and Brielle Pennington added two hits for the winners.
Meryl Bond tripled and scored and Kennadi Grover had an RBI groundout to back losing pitcher Emily Vitone.
In Game 2, Williams singled twice and Johnson hit an RBI single.
Katie Clark hit an RBI triple and Meryl Bond doubled behind Vitone, who gave up five hits.
Castleton sweeps Thomas
At Waterville, the Spartans retained first place in the North Atlantic Conference, sweeping the Terriers by scores of 4-2 and 8-0.
In the opener, Brittany Brayman drove in two runs with a double and a single to support Kayla Wood, who spaced five hits and struck out eight. Kayla Daigle added two hits and an RBI for Castleton State (16-9, 7-1 NAC).
Sonja Morse doubled and singled with an RBI and Briana Warren doubled and scored for Thomas (8-19, 4-4 NAC).
In Game 2, Taylor Paquette fired a three-hit shutout to set the tone. McKinlie Carpenter plated two runs with a double and a single and Jessica Babcock collected three singles and an RBI.
Korrie Laren, Taylor Johnson and Lindsy Hoopingarner singled for Thomas to back losing pitcher Emily McKenney.
