ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine Black Bears pounded out eight hits in a five-run first inning en route to a 14-3 baseball victory over the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers Tuesday at Mahaney Diamond.
The Division I Bears are now 16-22 and the Div. III Beavers are 17-18.
Steven Adam started Maine’s big inning with a one-out double. Scott Heath followed with a single and Adam then scored on Brett Chappell’s double.
Luke Morrill kept the rally going with another single and Brian Doran followed with an RBI single to right. Kevin Stypulkowski’s sacrifice fly accounted for the next run and Danny Diaz drove in two more runs with a single to to center.
Chappell finished with two doubles, a single and two RBIs for the Bears while Diaz recorded two hits and three RBIs. Shane Bussey chipped in with three singles while Sam Balzano, Adam, Heath and Brian Doran each contributed two hits.
Jake Marks (2-4) earned the win for the Bears after allowing three hits and three runs in five innings. He walked three and struck out four. Charlie Butler and Chris Piteo each pitched two scoreless innings, with Butler giving up two hits and Piteo not allowing any hits. He struck out two.
Jimmy Neal doubled, singled and drove in a run to lead UMF.
Colby 11, Husson 7
At Waterville, Colby and Husson combined for 32 hits and used 12 pitchers as the Mules took the non-conference win at Coombs Field.
Tommy Forese hit two of Colby’s four home runs, scored three times, and drove in four runs. Jason Buco also homered among his three hits, drove in two runs, and scored twice. Soren Hanson hit the other home run for the Mules.
Tim Corey, Ryder Arsenault, and Tyler Starks all had two hits for Colby (19-11). The Mules had 17 hits in the game against seven Husson pitchers.
Ryan Rebar led Husson (25-15) with four hits, two runs, and one RBI. Kyle Bishop, J.T. Whitten, Adam Wilson, and Chase Allen all had two hits.
Softball
Husson, Bowdoin split
At Brunswick, Allie Hill’s bunt single in the 10th scored Nicole Andrade to give Husson a 12-11 victory over Bowdoin in the first game of a doubleheader.
Bowdoin won the second game 5-3. Husson is now 23-11 and Bowdoin is 27-13.
In the second game, with the game in extra innings, Andrade was put on second base and advanced on Kayla Merrill’s sacrifice bunt before scoring on Hill’s bunt.
Chelsea Brennan sparked Husson in the first game with a home run, single and three RBIs. Haley Spiers chipped in with two doubles and an RBI while Deb Colpitts added a double, two singles and an RBI. Kayla Merrill, Lyndsay Merrill, Casey Lopes and Spiers each added two hits.
Victoria Rusch paced the Polar Bears with a double, two singles and three RBIs. Natalie Edwards, Emily Griffin, Marisa O’Toole and Katie Gately each notched three hits with Edwards driving in three runs.
In the second game, Siena Mitman hit a solo homer in the fifth and Marisa O’Toole added an RBI single as the Polar Bears snapped a 3-3 tie to earn the win.
Brennan doubled, singled and drove in two runs to lead Husson. Kayla Merrill and Colpitts each added two hits and Lyndsay Merrill had an RBI double.
Men’s Lacrosse
Castleton 17, Husson 0
At Castleton, Vermont, Taylor Swarter and Zach Davidson each scored five goals to help the Spartans roll by the Eagles in a North Atlantic Conference semifinal.
Davidson also had seven assists and Swarter had two as the Spartans improved to 11-5 and the Eagles finished at 9-6.
Tom Lepage made 13 saves for Husson.
NEC 20, MMA 10
At Henniker, New Hampshire, Nick Herzog scored two of his six goals in the first quarter when New England College surged to an 8-4 lead en route to the North Atlantic Conference semifinal win over Maine Maritime Academy.
Sean Largay chipped in with five goals and Matt Richard added four for NEC (8-7). Chris Galluzzo made 18 saves.
Nicholas Betti sparked MMA (7-8) with four goals and an assist. Dean Samuelson and Mike Fuller each contributed a goal and an assist. James Wilgus made six saves.
