BANGOR, Maine — The discovery of what appears to be a reddish canoe or kayak in the rapids at Six Mile Falls late Thursday afternoon prompted a roughly two-hour search of Kenduskeag Stream, a Bangor police official said.
The canoe was found about 4 p.m. hung up on the rocks near the falls, Sgt. Kevin MacLaren said Thursday night. Searchers determined that stream conditions were too dangerous because of the high water levels and decided not to attempt to retrieve it at that time.
It was not clear Thursday night if the vessel capsized with anyone in it and if so whether its occupants made it safely to shore or if it simply broke free from its mooring and floated downstream.
Bangor police searched the roadsides along the stream for unattended vehicles but found none.
In addition to Bangor police, the Bangor Fire Department, Down East Emergency Medicine Institute, which lent its aircraft to the mission, and the Maine Warden Service assisted with the search, MacLaren said.
Down East Emergency Medicine Institute operations director Richard Bowie said the search likely will resume Friday morning unless the owner comes forward or is found.
Anyone with information about the missing boat or its owner should call the Bangor Police Department at 947-7384.
