NEWPORT, Maine — A local man was arrested early Wednesday after a domestic incident involving a female family member, police said.

John Ginnish, 55, is accused of domestic violence assault and violation of conditions of release, Newport police Chief Leonard Macdaid said.

Macdaid said the female called police at 4 a.m. Wednesday after they had both been drinking at a friend’s house and told police Ginnish had choked her.

Police responded and took Ginnish into custody and brought him to the Penobscot County Jail.

No injuries were reported.
