MILLINOCKET, Maine — Maine State Police are investigating the death of an infant found unresponsive at a Katahdin Avenue residence on Tuesday night, a spokesman said Thursday.

The 6-month-old child was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he died Thursday, said Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

The mother of the infant called for an ambulance Tuesday night. The Millinocket Fire Department ambulance took the boy to Millinocket Regional Hospital before LifeFlight transferred him, McCausland said.

“Detectives are talking with [the mother], other caregivers and medical personnel,” McCausland said Thursday.

McCausland cautioned that state police investigate all untimely deaths, whether suspicious or otherwise.

The Bangor Daily News is withholding the name of the child and his family pending the disposition of the state police investigation.
