BANGOR — Something big is brewing in Bangor. On May 1, Bangor Historical Society and Geaghan Brothers Brewing Co. kicked off a home brewing contest, History on Tap, that culminates with the winning recipe being commercially produced as a limited edition release.

The home brew recipe contest will end Friday, July 10.

“We’re looking for recipes that use ingredients or methods that are historic or traditional in nature,” Geaghan Brothers Communications and Resource Manager Lisa Sturgeon said. “Beer has been around for centuries — we love the idea of today’s home brewers creating recipes that blend those traditions with today’s process.”

Entries will be judged Saturday and Sunday, July 11-12, by a panel of taste testers, including Zeth Lundy, owner of Central Street Farmhouse, head brewers from Geaghan Brothers Brewing Co. and representatives of Bangor Historical Society. The winner will receive a $100 gift card to Geaghan’s Pub and Craft Brewery, a copy of Stephen Harrod Buhner’s “Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers,” a $25 gift certificate from Central Street Farmhouse and a gift pack from Bangor HIstorical Society. The winner also will get to spend a day with Geaghan’s brew crew brewing his or her recipe on the company’s commercial system in Bangor. The winner will be announced July 13.

The final phase of History on Tap will be an unveiling event scheduled for September on the Bangor Waterfront. The event will include a brief talk about the history of brewing and the creation of the winning recipe, along with the first chance to sample the limited edition release.

“History on Tap gives the local brewing community a chance to get hands on experience with  historic practices and ingredients while connecting them with the techniques used today,” said Bangor Historical Society Executive Director Melissa Gerety.

To enter, participants may pick up applications at Central Street Farmhouse, or download an application at bangorhistoricalsociety.org. Completed applications and samples of the recipes may be dropped off at Central Street Farmhouse Monday through Friday, July 6-10. The entry fee is $25. All entry fees and proceeds from the unveiling event will benefit Bangor Historical Society.

The Bangor Historical Society will open for the season Tuesday, June 2. For information, call 942-1900.
