ROCKLAND, Maine — Local and state police agencies are expected to benefit from one of the largest seizures of cash in an area drug bust.
The Maine attorney general’s office is asking the court to distribute the proceeds of $136,446 in cash, a vehicle and firearms seized on Jan. 23 after the arrest of 25-year-old Ashley J. Hunt.
Police said Hunt had been dealing oxycodone in the area for three years. He was sentenced in March to four years in jail with all but 30 days suspended.
Seized were the cash, a 2012 Toyota Tacoma and two firearms. The proposed distribution, which must be approved by a judge, would have the Rockland Police Department receive $44,000 in cash. The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency is projected to receive $47,000 and the Maine State Police $46,000.
The truck will be kept by the state police and the two firearms by MDEA, according to the proposed distribution.
The $44,000 that Rockland is expected to receive is as much as the department has received in asset forfeitures over the past seven years. Rockland Police Chief Bruce Boucher said such funds have been used to buy the department’s stun guns and to lease equipment and pay for training.
