PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland Sea Dogs (16-22) extended their season-long winning streak to four, defeating the Altoona Curve (22-14) 14-10 on a wild night at Hadlock Field.
The two teams combined for 24 runs, 31 hits, 18 extra-base hits, and four errors in the 3-hour, 19-minute Eastern League contest. The Sea Dogs (16-22) posted new season highs in runs (14), hits (17), doubles (6), triples (3), extra-base hits (10) and total bases (32).
The 14 runs for Portland are the most it has scored in a game since an 18-run outburst on May 24, 2014, at New Hampshire.
After Altoona (22-14) jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the top of the fourth, the Sea Dogs scored nine unanswered runs to take an 11-7 advantage after six innings. Portland scored in seven of eight innings overall.
Both starters last just four innings. Altoona’s Angel Sanchez, who came into the night with the eighth-best ERA in the league (2.09), pitched four-plus and allowed six earned runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out three.
Luis Diaz went four innings for Portland and allowed seven earned runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out one.
Eight of the nine batters in each team’s lineup recorded at least one hit, and each team tied its own franchise record with three triples.
Carlos Asuaje (double, triple, single, 4 RBI), Luis Martinez (two doubles, single, 3 RBI) and Blake Tekotte (triple, two singles) propelled Portland. Oscar Tejeda hit his first home run of the season — the first by a Sea Dog at Hadlock Field since Marco Hernandez homered on April 14 against New Britain.
Keon Broxton (two triples, single, RBI)) paced the Curve while Gift Ngoepe (homer, triple, 3 RBI) reached base four times.
Over their last four games, the Sea Dogs have scored 40 runs on 57 hits, raising their team average from .244 to .262.
