CASCO, Maine — A tank loaded with 500 gallons of asphalt sealcoating material ruptured Friday afternoon and leaked large amounts of the substance onto the road, damaging at least one vehicle that drove through the spill.
Police said Paul Cricones, 35, of Casco, the owner of PRC Sealcoating, was towing a trailer with the fully loaded tank at about 5 p.m. Friday. Cricones was traveling north on Meadow Road in the area of Plains Road when the tank ruptured and began to leak the thick, black oil onto the road, according to a press release issued by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Sealcoating is used to seal asphalt surfaces.
Cricones realized the tank was leaking when he drove into Casco Village and pulled over. A sheriff’s deputy noticed the situation and contacted the Casco Fire Department, which responded and worked to contain the spill, which was estimated to be about 250 gallons.
Police said they also contacted the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to let officials know about the incident.
At least one vehicle traveled through the material, coating its exterior. Police are asking anyone who experienced a similar occurrence from the incident to contact the Cumberland County sheriff’s office at 893-2810.
