SKOWHEGAN, Maine — The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a telephone scam after several complaints were fielded on Memorial Day, according to Sheriff Dale Lancaster.

Lancaster said an individual identifying himself as Officer Evans from the sheriff’s office was contacting residents in the Fairfield area advising them they had missed a grand jury summons and had a warrant for their arrest.

The caller also stated if a specific amount of money was paid, the warrant would be recalled, but if not, a deputy would be out to arrest them, Lancaster said.

Investigative efforts revealed the caller was utilizing a track phone that had been purchased somewhere in Georgia, and the caller had the phone’s voicemail system set up to remind the caller they had reached Officer Evans from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office when the number was reached.

Lancaster said the unknown caller contacted a state trooper with similar demands. No money has exchanged hands, and the sheriff’s office is warning the public not to send out money. The sheriff’s office said it does not employ an officer named Evans.

Anyone with questions should call the sheriff’s office at 474-9591.
