AUGUSTA, Maine — Augusta police are trying to find whoever broke into the Elks Lodge and stole thousands of dollars in cash. The crime happened early Tuesday morning.
In addition to $5,000 worth of vandalism, police say $15,000 was stolen. Police say the $15,000 stolen was money the lodge was planning to use for a fundraising concert. Proceeds from that concert would have gone to the Travis Mills Foundation for injured veterans.
“It was one of those things where it was waiting to be deposited in a short period of time, so obviously that’s an issue we’re looking into as well as who knew that the money would be there and that type of thing, because it certainly isn’t something that they leave lying around for extended periods of time,” Augusta Deputy police Chief Jared Mills said.
The Travis Mills Foundation director said they hope the community will rally around the Augusta Elks Lodge. The lodge is hoping the losses will be covered by insurance.
