BANGOR — While renovation work continues for the Bangor Public Library, the summer music tradition lives on with the 18th annual Summer Music Series, co-sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank and Maine Night Off. As they have for many years, The Bangor Band will kick off the series at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 16. All performances, weather permitting, will be played at 7 p.m., unless otherwise noted, in Peirce Park, just outside the library.
“The Bangor Public Library is an amazing organization providing activities and resources for our community and we are very proud to partner with them and help produce the 2015 Summer Music Series,” said John Stuart, president of Maine Night Out. “Our company loves to support local events like this in any way we can. We look forward to working with them on more events like this in the near future.”
The Summer Music Series began as a way to showcase the newest addition of the library by featuring the arts. One of the first performances was by a local big band providing music for a dance for the public. Norman Minsky, former board member and mayor, grew up in Bangor where the lesson always was to be quiet in the library, so featuring live music and dancing in the lobby was a welcome change. This idea developed into the Summer Music Series that features local performers and a “taste” of music from all genres.
“Bangor Savings Bank is committed to supporting organizations and activities that advance community development and improve the quality of life in our Maine communities,” said Lisa Bird, assistant vice president of Bangor Savings Bank. “Supporting the Bangor Public Library’s Summer Music is an example of our commitment to arts and culture.”
While the renovation continues in the building, the library is pleased to be able to offer the Summer Music Series while many other normal programs have been postponed until the building is complete.
The schedule is:
- Between Dead Stations, blues and rock, June 24.
- Acoustic Showcase featuring Meghan Clark, Riff Johnson and Shannon Denbow, July 1.
- The Resistance, featuring rock and pop rock covers, and original works, 6 to 8 p.m. July 8.
- Divisi, contemporary choral group, July 15.
- Stesha Cano and the Jerks, jazz, rhythm and blues and modern pop, July 22.
- The Tyler Healy Band, Top 40s country, July 29.
- The Trendy Robots, Top Rock, Top 40s, Aug. 5.
Bangor Public Library serves as the music library for the Bangor Symphony, the District 5 band, and choral music for area choirs to borrow. The Summer Music Series is just one of the many programs offered to the public free of charge.
