BANGOR, Maine — Bangor residents are casting their votes Tuesday regarding the school department’s proposed $43.89 million budget.

That’s a total spending increase of $739,785 or 1.17 percent over the previous year. If passed, it would equal a local property tax increase of 8 cents on the mill rate.

However, school officials say additional state revenues are possible that would reduce the tax increase to zero.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center on Main Street. Voter turnout is expected to be low, according to city officials.

Voting also is taking place in many other Maine towns, including Brewer and Ellsworth.
