ORLAND — These events will take place in the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands:
- Bird Walk on the Wild(lands) Side, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 13. Downeast Audubon and Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust will collaborate for a morning of late spring birding led by GPMCT Executive Director Cheri Domina. Meet at the South Gate on Route 1 at the Route 176 junction to carpool. For information, call 469-2008 or e-mail info@greatpondtrust.org.
- Sunrise Solstice Hike on Great Pond Mountain, 4 a.m. Sunday, June 21. Celebrate the longest day of the year by greeting the sunrise on top of the mountain, one of the first places in the United States the sun will rise. Sun rises at 4:50 a.m. Meet at Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery in East Orland. For information, call leader Sarah LeVine at 667-1293 or email sarahlevine5@gmail.com.
- Alewife Run, Paddle and Kayak events, 8 a.m. Saturday, June 27, Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery. Paddle to the Orland River Day festivities from Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery to Orland Village. Cheri Domina from Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust and Karen Francouer of Castine Kayak will lead paddlers from Orland’s Alamoosook Lake Beach at 8 a.m. for a leisurely 3.5-mile (less than two-hour) paddle down the Narramissic River, arriving in the village in time for the parade. One short portage around a dam is involved. Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust will have a canoe, paddles and PFD’s available to borrow by reservation. To leave a vehicle in the village, drop off your boat at the hatchery, then drive to the village and catch the shuttle back (courtesy of First Student), leaving from the Ian Joseph Boatworks parking lot on Route 175 next to the Post Office at 7:30 am. Also during Orland River Day, see a free rescue and rolling demonstration at 11:30 a.m. on the Narramissic River waterfront. Maine sea kayak guides from Castine Kayak will demonstrate “Many Ways to RIGHT and RE-ENTER your Kayak.”
