BREWER — At a recent Brewer Kiwanis Club meeting special guests were Key Club member Kathryn Jakubowski, Key Club Adviser Arthur Libby James Neville of the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor and Paul House.

New member Ron Bragg was welcomed into the club.

Guest speaker Paul House, executive director of House in the Woods, talked about the military and family retreat. House in the Woods was founded by two fathers who each lost his son during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007. House is the father of the late Sgt. Joel A. House. Bill Emery, father of the late Sgt. Blair W. Emery is the director of programming services. Through House in the Woods, the two fathers work to honor their sons’ sacrifices by carrying on the tradition of helping their brothers-in-arms. The retreat’s mission is to create a therapeutic recreational and educational retreat for U.S. armed forces and their families, using outdoor wilderness activities in Maine to help participants share common challenges related to their service and sacrifice. Food and lodging is provided at no cost to veterans and active-duty military. For information, go to houseinthewoods.org.

At the meeting the Brewer Kiwanis board authorized donations to Brewer Performing Arts Center, Brewer Historical Society and Maine Discovery Museum.

Brewer Kiwanis also awarded these scholarships:

  • Wesley Archer Memorial Scholarship to Maria Colley.
  • Carlton King Memorial Scholarship to Rachel Largay.
  • For the first time Brewer Kiwanis presented a scholarship from the Brewer High School JROTC Program to Kyle Hanson.
  • Cassy Green received the Becky Bubar Honorary scholarship from an anonymous Brewer Kiwanian.

Brewer Kiwanis Club meets at 6 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays each month at the High Tide Restaurant in Brewer.
