HOPE, Maine — The Knox County Sheriff’s Office has asked for the public’s help in locating a truck police believe is the source of a rock that fell and struck another vehicle, killing the driver.

The driver of the car was James Nash, 73, of Camden. Nash’s wife was a passenger in the vehicle and was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, where she was being treated for minor injuries and shock, according to Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll.

The accident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on Route 17 near the Hope and Union town line. Nash was driving east in a 2013 Honda Civic when the rock came through the windshield. The other vehicle is believed to have been traveling in the opposite direction.

Police are looking for the truck from which the rock is believed to have come. Carroll said the driver of the truck may not even be aware of the accident. The rock was 6 to 8 inches in diameter.

The chief deputy said it isn’t yet known what direction the truck was traveling and that the accident remains under investigation. Members of the Maine State Police commercial truck division are expected to assist in the investigation. The vehicle that was hit was towed. Route 17 was blocked for about two hours while police investigated.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Knox County Regional Communications Center at 207-593-9132. Callers are asked to provide a name and contact information so a deputy can call back.
