NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine — A Fairfield man was killed Saturday afternoon in a crash in which he was ejected from a vehicle he was riding in through the sunroof window, according to the Department of Public Safety.
Anthony Vandyck, 40, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Derek Knowles, 35, of Skowhegan, according to Spokesman Stephen McCausland. The pair were traveling north along the Maine Turnpike.
McCausland said Knowles had a suspended driver’s license due to multiple violations.
Knowles apparently lost control of the SUV the men were in on a straight stretch of highway, and the vehicle struck the guardrails in the median and overturned down an embankment.
McCausland said Vandyck was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Knowles suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at an area hospital.
After he was discharged, Knowles was arrested on outstanding warrants unrelated to the crash and brought to the Androscoggin County Jail.
Additional charges against Knowles could be filed after troopers consult with the district attorney’s office.
