Bulls name former UMaine standout as associate head coach

The Chicago Bulls named San Antonio Spurs assistant Jim Boylen as associate head coach Wednesday on Fred Hoiberg’s new staff.

Hoiberg wanted Boylen for his defensive coaching prowess and to help him make the move up from college. Hoiberg left Iowa State to become the Bulls’ 19th head coach on June 1.

Boylen, 50, comes to Chicago with 29 years of coaching experience, including 17 years of service in the NBA. He spent last two seasons on Gregg Popovich’s staff in San Antonio. He was a former University of Maine standout (1983-87).

“I am very excited to add Jim to our staff as our associate head coach,” Hoiberg said in a statement. “His track record speaks for itself with nearly 30 years of coaching experience and three NBA championships on his resume. His work ethic and attention to detail will help our team every day, and I look forward to working with him as we prepare for next season.”

Sober OG Moffitt seeks comeback

Offensive guard John Moffitt, who abruptly retired from the NFL in 2013 at age 27, is planning to make a comeback after battling drug issues.

FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer said Wednesday that the now 28-year-old Moffitt, who has been training with him, has decided to unretire.

The Denver Broncos, who still owned his rights, waived Moffitt from the reserve/retired list on Wednesday. He will be subject to the waiver process because Moffitt had fewer than four years of service when he retired. If unclaimed, he will become a free agent.

Moffitt, who was the No. 75 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin, started 15 games at guard for the Seattle Seahawks in 2011 and 2012. The Broncos acquired him on Aug. 20. Moffitt played in two games for Denver before retiring.

Michigan State extends Izzo’s contract

Michigan State’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted Wednesday to extend the contract of men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo through the 2020-21 season.

The board also approved extensions for athletic director Mark Hollis, women’s basketball coach Suzy Merchant and men’s hockey coach Tom Anastos.

Izzo, whose new deal expires on June 30, 2021, received approximately $3.8 million in total compensation in 2013-14.

Izzo was named head coach in 1995, succeeding Jud Heathcote, and has led the Spartans to seven Final Fours, including the 2015 national semifinals. Going into the 2015-16 season, Izzo is five wins from 500 in his career.

Hollis’ contract was extended until June 30, 2019. He has a base salary of $600,000 per year.
