BREWER — Five Maine residents have been awarded the Sandra C. Labaree Award by the New England Division of the American Cancer Society. The award, given to volunteers is the most honored accolade bestowed by the New England Division. The 2015 recipients are Jessica Sargent, Brewer; David Clark, Gardiner; Mallory Schwebel, Norway; Peggy Belanger, Old Orchard Beach; and Marianne Moore, Calais.
The Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award recognizes and honors those volunteers whose actions and service in the fight against cancer most exemplify the American Cancer Society’s organizational values. These awards are very special reminders of the power volunteers have to save lives and reduce suffering from cancer. They also are imbued with special meaning because they are named in honor of the late Sandra C. Labaree, a volunteer from Damariscotta, and founding member of the New England Division Board.
Jessica Sargent, 13, received the award at the Relay For Life of Penobscot County, held on May 15 at the University of Maine Morse Field. She began volunteering approximately seven years ago. In 2008, she began raising money for the American Cancer Society through participating in the Relay For Life of Penobscot County. In 2014, she was the captain of “The O Team” at the event, and was also the top individual fundraiser collecting more than $6,000. Recently she was recognized by the city of Brewer for her continued effort in the betterment of her community.
