PORTLAND, Maine — A former Old Orchard Beach man pleaded guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court to one count of failing to register as a sex offender.
James Robert Underwood, 43, who now lives in Dalton, Georgia, was convicted in 1999 in Georgia of rape and other charges, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was released in 2009.
The conviction required him to register as a sex offender. In May 2012, he moved to Old Orchard Beach but failed to register, according to court documents.
He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Underwood is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 5.
He has been held without bail since his arrest in February in Georgia.
