LYMAN, Maine — A Lyman man is in jail for violating conditions of release on a previous crime after police found a firearm in his home when they responded to reports of an altercation there Friday night.

Maine State Police troopers went to the Lyman residence of George Jones, 45, Saturday after getting a report that Jones had been involved in an argument at the home Friday night and had been seen waving a firearm around, according to Sgt. Jeremy Forbes of the Maine State Police barracks in Alfred.

Jones was currently out on bail from a previous arrest for unlawful trafficking in heroin and could not be in possession of a firearm under those bail conditions, Forbes said.

Forbes, along with Troopers Benjamin Smith and Adam Schmidt, questioned Jones Saturday at his home and Forbes said the man denied having a gun in the house.

A subsequent search by the troopers turned up a WASR-2 5.45x39mm Romanian rifle under a mattress in Jones’ bedroom, Forbes said.

Police also observed the presence of several small children in the house who were reportedly present during Friday night’s altercation, Forbes said.

Jones was arrested on charges of felony violation of conditions of release and taken to the York County Jail where he is being held without bail.

He will appear in York County Superior Court on Aug. 14.

Maine Child Protective Services was notified of the incident due to the presence of children in the house, Forbes said.
