Ex-UMaine field hockey player to compete in Pan Am Games

Former University of Maine field hockey standout Holly Stewart of North Vancouver, British Columbia, has been named to the Canadian Field Hockey team that will compete as part of the 2015 Pan Am Games. Stewart was one of 16 women selected to the squad.

The Pan American field hockey games will be held in Toronto July 10 -26 and serve as a 2016 Olympic Games qualifying tournament, with the winner earning a spot at the Olympic Games next summer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Earlier this month, Stewart was named the 2015 America East Woman of the Year.

Swede Lidstrom headlines Hall of Fame’s Class of 2015

June 29 (Reuters) — Sweden’s Nicklas Lidstrom, one of the NHL’s most decorated defensemen and a trailblazing leader, was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday as part of the shrine’s seven-member Class of 2015.

Lidstrom was joined by fellow National Hockey League players Sergei Fedorov of Russia, Canadian Chris Pronger and American Phil Housley, while American Angela Ruggiero became the fourth woman ever elected for induction.

Bill Hay, a former president of Hockey Canada and the Calgary Flames, and Peter Karmanos Jr., who won a Stanley Cup as owner and chief executive of the Carolina Hurricanes, were elected for their contributions to the game over the decades.

Lidstrom, a seven-time winner of the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman, one fewer than Bobby Orr’s eight, spent his entire 20-season career with the Detroit Red Wings and helped them win the Stanley Cup four times.

In 2008 he became the first European-born and -trained player to captain a team to the Cup.

Wisconsin’s Ryan to retire after upcoming season

Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan announced Monday he will retire after the 2015-16 season.

The 67-year-old Ryan, who is coming off back-to-back Final Four appearances, said he considered retiring after the Badgers lost in the national championship game to Duke. Athletic director Barry Alvarez then told him to take some time to think about it.

Ryan said he will coach this season before stepping down and hopes longtime assistant Greg Gard succeeds him.

The Badgers knocked off the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats in the national semifinals before losing to Duke in the title game.

Ryan took at Wisconsin after Dick Bennett left in 2001 and is 357-125 in his 14 seasons at Wisconsin.

De La Hoya says he will remain retired

A week after saying he was considering a comeback, boxing Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya changed his mind.

De La Hoya, who has not fought since an eighth-round knockout loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2008, told ESPN.com on June 22 that his chances of fighting again were “50-50.”

But, on Monday, the 42-year-old released a statement saying he has decided to remain retired.

“As a professional athlete and someone who has spent almost his entire life in boxing, not a day goes by when I don’t think about coming back,” he said. “But I am retired; and, after speaking to my family and following a great deal of introspection, I have decided to stay retired.”

Bruins acquire forward Rinaldo from Flyers

The Boston Bruins acquired forward Zac Rinaldo from the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday in exchange for the team’s third-round draft pick in 2017.

Rinaldo skated in 58 games with the Flyers during the 2014-15 campaign, registering one goal and five assists for six points. He led the team in penalty minutes with 102.

The 25-year-old Rinaldo has played in 223 games at the NHL level, all with Philadelphia, recording 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) and 572 penalty minutes.
