WINDHAM, Maine — A Lewiston man who died Monday at the Maine Correctional Center while serving a nine-month sentence for operating after habitual offender revocation died of natural causes, according to state police.
Jeppie Phillips, 51, most recently of Lewiston, was found dead in his cell at about 2:30 a.m. Monday.
Phillips died of natural causes, and no foul play is suspected, Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in an email Wednesday. McCausland said the state medical examiner will run additional tests before determining the exact cause of death.
Phillips had served about seven weeks of his sentence for operating after habitual offender revocation with two priors, a Class C felony.
The PenBay Pilot reported last summer that Phillips was arrested after state police stopped to assist a stranded motorist on Interstate 295 in Bowdoinham. Phillips, who was 50 at the time, was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on a charge of operating a motor vehicle after suspension, the paper reported.
