MACHIAS, Maine — The Washington County Courthouse will be closed through Monday, July 13, so that employees can move into recently constructed offices.

The move is part of an $8.3 million project which includes an addition and the refurbishing of the interior of the existing courthouse.

“We have 25 people moving in 25 different directions right now,” county Manager Betsy Fitzgerald said Wednesday.

Both Machias District Court and Washington County Superior Court will be closed July 8, 9, 10 and 13. Calais District Court and Ellsworth District Court will be handling emergency filings, including protection orders, that would ordinarily be filed in Machias.

Members of the public may use whichever of those district courts is more convenient.

Non-emergency filings may be taken to Calais District Court or mailed to Machias District Court and Washington County Superior Court at P.O. Box 526, Machias 04654.

When the courthouse opens again July 14, the new public entrance will be along Cooper Street instead of on Court Street, Fitzgerald said.

Work on the project began in the fall of 2014 and is expected to be completed in December.
