Maine team splits final two games in national field hockey tourney
The Waterville-based Maine Majestix Under-16 field hockey team split a pair of games for the third straight day Tuesday at the National Club Championships in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and concluded the tourney with a 3-3 record good for 11th out of 16 teams.
The Majestix lost to TCOYO from Virginia Beach, Virginia 4-1 before topping IFHCK from Kentucky 4-3 in its second game.
In the nightcap, Belfast’s Kylie Nelson scored a pair of goals and her Belfast High School teammate, Kelsey Mehuren, had one as did Emily Molino from Winthrop.
In the opener, Messalonskee of Oakland’s Ally Corbett had the lone goal.
Nelson had goals in four of the team’s six games and finished the tournament with a team-high five goals.
Mehuren was next with four.
Katie Bernatchez, who coached the team with her mother Amy, said Cony High of Augusta’s Delaney Keithley, Messalonskee’s Corbett and Autumn Littlefield and Mt. Blue of Farmington’s Hannah Minns anchored the defense in front of goalie Kelsey Thaller of Skowhegan, who made several important saves during the tournament.
Messalonskee’s Josie Varney was the spark plug while playing virtually every minute at center mid, according to Bernatchez.
Banned FSU quarterback apologizes for hitting woman
De’Andre Johnson apologized in an interview with “Good Morning America” on Tuesday and said there was no explanation for his actions in a confrontation with a woman in June.
The state’s attorney’s office released surveillance video of Johnson striking a 21-year-old woman June 24 in a bar in Tallahassee, and head coach Jimbo Fisher and the Seminoles acted immediately.
Johnson, a freshman quarterback at Florida State before being dismissed in light of the misdemeanor battery charges, was seated next to his mother, Pamela Jones, for the sitdown with Michael Strahan.
“I totally should have walked away,” the 19-year old said.
Johnson’s attorney claims a racial slur started the confrontation and claims Johnson reacted only after being kneed in the groin and trying again to “de-escalate” the situation.
Florida State president John E. Thrasher held a meeting with Seminoles’ football players Monday to remind them that playing for the ACC program is a privilege not a right, and accountability would be stressed moving forward.
Forward Perry Jones III goes to Celtics in deal
The Boston Celtics acquired forward Perry Jones III from the Oklahoma City Thunder, a second-round in the 2019 NBA Draft from the Detroit Pistons and cash considerations in exchange for a future conditional second-round pick on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-11 Jones III averaged 4.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in 43 games for the Thunder last season. He scored a season-high 32 points against the Los Angeles Clippers on Oct. 30 after standout Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant was sidelined with an injury and averaged 22.7 points during a three-game run.
Jones then suffered a knee injury, missed 13 games and saw limited action after the All-Star break in February.
McNabb’s blood alcohol tested at 0.17
Former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit during an arrest in Arizona in June on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Gilbert (Ariz.) Police in suburban Phoenix said McNabb’s blood alcohol tested at 0.17. In Arizona, the legal limit is 0.08, with 0.15 or higher considered extreme DUI.
According to police, McNabb’s vehicle rear-ended a vehicle of a police officer’s wife on June 28. No one was injured and McNabb was later released after being cited.
At the scene of the accident, McNabb’s eyes were “very bloodshot and his speech was slurred,” the arrest report indicated. McNabb told the officer that he had been at a sports bar but wasn’t drinking because he was sick.
