SOUTH THOMASTON, Maine — A Thomaston man was injured Friday afternoon when his van crashed during a heavy downpour.

The crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on Route 131 in South Thomaston, according to Lt. Reginald Walker of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. The 2003 GMC van was traveling north when witnesses saw the van suddenly veer off the roadway during a heavy rainstorm.

South Thomaston emergency medical services and Knox deputies went to the crash.

Michael Bedell, 48, was the only occupant of the van, and he had to be extricated by emergency medical personnel including with assistance from Rockland Fire Department. Bedell was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center for treatment.

Deputy Pat Polky is investigating the accident.
