ERIE, Pennsylvania — The Erie SeaWolves had gone 120 games without a shutout, but that changed on Tuesday night with a 3-0 Eastern League victory over the Portland Sea Dogs in the series opener at Jerry Uht Park.
Michael Fulmer (7-2) tossed 6⅔ innings of two-hit ball in his Tigers organizational debut to earn the win for Erie (41-69). Fulmer issued two walks, fanned six and allowed all four baserunners with two outs.
Mike McCarthy (6-5) tied a career high with 7.0 innings pitched, but took the loss for Portland (40-70). McCarthy allowed a pair of two-out RBI singles to James Robbins. Erie added the third run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jacoby Jones off Heri Quevedo.
Slade Smith relieved Fulmer in the seventh and worked 1⅓ innings to earn his third hold of the season. Matt Crouse pitched the ninth for his first save.
Carlos Asuaje, Henry Ramos, Tim Roberson and Sam Travis each had a hit for Portland, which has lost 14 of 20 to the Western Division.
The Sea Dogs and Erie SeaWolves continue their three-game series on Wednesday night. Aaron Wilkerson makes his Double-A debut for Portland against Erie righty Tommy Collier (3-1, 3.23 ERA).
