WATERVILLE, Maine — Police are investigating a string of motor-vehicle burglaries that may be connected to a vehicle theft.
Investigative efforts began early Sunday morning when police were called to a crash on May Street shortly before 4 a.m., according to Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey.
Police arrived to find a Chevy Suburban that had crashed into a tree, and its airbags deployed. Rumsey said witnesses observed a man leap from the vehicle and flee after the accident.
A check of the registration revealed the truck was registered to an Oak Street address, and a subsequent canine track of the suspect did not catch him, Rumsey said.
While police were heading towards Oak Street, they discovered approximately 14 vehicles had been broken into in the area, Rumsey said. All the vehicles were unlocked and had dome lights on or doors opened.
Items such as tobacco, GPS units, an XM Radio and an EZPass were stolen. Police believe the burglaries are connected to the crashed Suburban and are looking for the man who was driving it.
The suspect was wearing white shorts and a blue shirt and anybody who may know who he is should call Waterville police at 680-4700.
Rumsey also advised the public to keep valuables safe and their vehicles locked.
