YORK, Maine — A York police officer and a motorist were taken to York Hospital on Wednesday evening, following an accident on Route 1 in Cape Neddick that caused traffic backlogs for more than an hour.

State police Sgt. James Urquhart said York police officer Jamie Rooney was traveling north on Route 1 around 4 p.m. when a car exiting from the vicinity of Nancy’s Catering pulled out in front of her vehicle.

Rooney’s police vehicle “T-boned” the other vehicle, Urquhart said. He said the driver apparently did not see the police vehicle before she pulled out. Urquhart said at the scene he did not have the name of the motorist, who was removed from her vehicle using the Jaws of Life.

The motorist suffered internal injuries, and Rooney had head lacerations, he said. The injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Urquhart is leading the investigation because a local officer is involved.

Route 1 was reduced to one lane for more than an hour while authorities cleared the scene.
